Spelling Rules You Must Know for 1 to 100

The complete list above gives you every answer. But knowing the rules means you can write any number correctly without looking it up. There are really just four things to remember for this range.

The Teens Are Unique — Memorize Them

Numbers 11 to 19 do not follow a simple pattern the way 21 to 99 do. Each one has its own spelling that you need to memorize. The most commonly misspelled ones are Eleven, Twelve, Fifteen, and Eighteen.

Eleven has two L’s. Twelve ends in “lve” not “lv.” Fifteen comes from Five but drops the “ve” and adds “teen.” Eighteen comes from Eight but only has one “t” — Eighteen, not Eighthteen.

Once you get past 19, the pattern becomes consistent and predictable. From Twenty onwards, you’re always combining a base word with a ones digit and a hyphen.

The teen numbers show up constantly in everyday life — ages, dates, page numbers, exam scores. Getting them right is worth the few minutes it takes to memorize them properly.

Forty Has No U — Ever

Four has a “u” in it. Fourteen has a “u” in it. But Forty does not. This surprises almost everyone the first time they see it. The spelling goes F-O-R-T-Y with no “u” anywhere.

This is the single most common spelling mistake in the 1 to 100 range. It shows up on school papers, bank cheques, and official forms every day. Banks don’t reject cheques for this, but teachers mark it wrong and it looks unprofessional on documents.

The same applies to Forty-One through Forty-Nine. None of them have a “u.” Just remember — drop the “u” the moment you go from Four to Forty.

A simple trick: think of Forty as its own word, completely separate from Four. That mental separation helps the correct spelling stick.

Hyphens Are Required from 21 to 99

Every two-digit number from 21 to 99 that combines a tens word with a ones word needs a hyphen in between. Twenty-One, Thirty-Five, Sixty-Eight, Ninety-Nine — all hyphenated.

The tens words themselves — Twenty, Thirty, Forty, Fifty, Sixty, Seventy, Eighty, Ninety — never get a hyphen on their own. The hyphen only appears when you add a ones digit after them.

This rule is consistent with no exceptions in this range. So once you know it, you can apply it to every compound number from 21 to 99 without thinking twice.

On official documents and school exams, the hyphen is expected. Leaving it out is an error. It’s a small detail that’s very easy to get right once you make it a habit.

One Hundred Has No “s” on Hundred

100 is One Hundred — not One Hundreds. The word Hundred stays singular when you’re writing a number. This applies throughout the entire number system, not just at 100.

You’ll never write “Two Hundreds” or “Five Hundreds” in standard number writing. Hundred is always singular. The same rule applies to Thousand when you get into larger numbers.

Writing Numbers 1 to 100 on a Cheque

For cheque writing, you add the currency and the word “Only” at the end of the written amount. Here are some examples from the 1 to 100 range.

AmountCheque Format
7Seven Rupees Only
22Twenty-Two Rupees Only
50Fifty Rupees Only
75Seventy-Five Rupees Only
92Ninety-Two Rupees Only
100One Hundred Rupees Only

Always draw a line after the word “Only” to fill any remaining blank space. This prevents anyone from adding extra words after your written amount.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is 40 in words?

40 in words is Forty. Note the spelling carefully — there is no “u” in Forty. This is one of the most common spelling mistakes people make. Four has a “u” but Forty does not. The same applies to Forty-One, Forty-Two, and all numbers in the forties.

How do you write 92 in words?

92 in words is Ninety-Two. Ninety comes from Nine but adds “ty” at the end. Two-digit numbers from 21 to 99 always get a hyphen between the tens word and the ones word. So it’s Ninety-Two with a hyphen, not Ninety Two.

What is the spelling of 15?

15 in words is Fifteen. It comes from Five but the spelling changes — the “ve” in Five becomes “f” in Fifteen. So it’s F-I-F-T-E-E-N. This is one of the teen numbers that needs to be memorized since it doesn’t follow a perfectly predictable pattern.

How do you write numbers 1 to 100 in words for a school exam?

For school exams, write numbers using capital first letters, include hyphens for compound numbers from 21 to 99, and spell everything correctly. The most important things to remember are: Forty not Fourty, Fifteen not Fiveteen, Eighteen not Eighthteen, and hyphens for all two-digit compound numbers.

What comes after Ninety-Nine?

One Hundred comes after Ninety-Nine. 100 is written as One Hundred with no “s” on Hundred and no hyphen. From here the pattern continues — One Hundred One, One Hundred Two, and so on. See the full guide for numbers 101 to 500 in words.
